July 1st - August 31st
Benefiting UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital
What is this toy drive about?
This toy drive was started last year by a big hearted, precocious 7-year-old named Marcus Mead.
He is the big brother of "Mighty Maia" who was born on August 29, 2013. Maia was born with several congenital heart defects including Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. Most of her short life was spent in the hospital, in the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at UCSF. She endured countless surgeries, procedures, and complications but is most known for her bright eyes, big smile, and her relentless fighting spirit. After fighting a brave battle, Maia became an angel on her 1st birthday.
As Maia's big brother, Marcus knows all too well what it feels like to live in the hospital. He was always by Maia's side and also befriended many patients and their siblings, and wants to put smiles on all the kids' faces. It's his way of keeping Maia's memory alive while doing something positive and inspiring.
Although Maia is only with us in spirit, we are forever grateful for the love, support, and prayers our family continues to receive. Our mission in life is to give back and help others, inspire, even if it's as simple as sharing our story.
When is the toy drive? What kind of toys?
The 2nd Annual Heart of Maia Toy Drive runs from July 1st - August 31st. We are collecting new, unwrapped toys, books, and stuffed animals for kids ages Newborn to 17 years old. These toys are for sick kids in the hospital, so they need to be new.
*** Ideas for toys – think of toys you would get for your own kids, friend's kids, nieces, nephews.
It does not need to be expensive, check out the clearance sections, and let stores know you're shopping for a toy drive/charity and maybe get a discount (doesn't hurt to ask)!
What types of donations are accepted?
Aside from toys, books, and stuffed animals, monetary donations are also welcome. Checks can be made payable to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital with Child Life Department - Heart of Maia written on memo line. Credit card donations can be made online at www.makeagift.ucsf.edu, in memory of Maia Mead.
